Scouting Report

I arrived safe and sound on Thursday afternoon after a long flight from Belfast to Baltimore. Everything ran smoothly apart from a slight issue with the size of my hand luggage; which was completely taken up with a years worth of shoes! I really enjoy flying but these days its become too much like work.

Autumn Leaves

On Friday morning Shana and I went for a walk around Bethesda to check out where I would be working and living for the next 12 months. I couldn't believe how warm it was for this time of the year. I even had to trawl through my suitcase to find my sunglasses. It really was the most beautiful day outside, thanks to the autumn leaves and clear blue sky.

BIS Offices

The first place we stopped was at BIS's office on Old Georgetown Road. It was strange to finally be standing outside this building, as for the last few months I've had to imagine what it looked like in my head. I'm very excited, but also incredibly nervous about starting work in 2 short weeks!

Downtown Bethesda

Bethesda is one of the nicest cities I've ever visited, and seems to get the balance right between modern skyscrapers and old-skool buildings. The streets were clean and there were lots of Bethesdans out strolling around!

My Apartment

The last stop on the tour was Strathmore Street; where I'll be living during my stay. I was very impressed with the outside of my apartment, and am hoping the inside is just as cool. I'll be sharing a 3 bedroom apartment with two guys called Josh and Pete, who I will meet sometime this week. My room is at the front on the very left, under the sloped part of the roof.

Catch Me If You Can!

T-minus Graphic

With only three more days to go till take-off, the reality of the next 12 months is starting to kick in. It has been a mixture of anxiety, excitement, sadness, and relief. Although I've spent a year away from home before, it seems much more 'real' this time around. The thought of moving into my own place, paying Mr. Bills, buying my own bed, and starting a new job are all pretty scary on their own, but when you cram them all into the space of two weeks, and add the whole foreign country thing, then it becomes daunting!

Whatever challenges life has thrown my way, I have always been fortunate enough to have the love and support of my family and friends. I count myself very lucky to have this new adventure to look forward to, and I plan to take every opportunity to better myself and make everyone proud.

A big thank you goes out to the girls behind the CSD at Tesco N'Abbey (Wendy, Sharona, Rachel, Emma, and Ann) for all your cards, gifts, hugs, and kind words of support. I enjoyed every minute spent working with you all, and I hope we can stay in touch over the next year.

My next journal entry will be from the other side of the pond. I hope to have pictures of my apartment, office, and town online within the next few weeks.
