A Long Weekend in Charleston

This weekend past presented an opportunity for me to fly down to visit Gareth in Charleston, and with the month I've just had, the break was a great way to get my head showered! I touched down in S.Carolina late on Thursday afternoon, and was met by Gareth, some clear blue skies, and an old friend I like to call 'Mr. Sunshine'.

Palm Tree and moon

Once we got back to his house from the airport, I took some time to see all the recent home improvements Gareth has done to his place. And when I say recent, I literally mean the painter was still in the house! But seriously the house looked great, and I was happy I could tag along to a few furniture stores on Friday to help pick out some essentials.

Gareth, Jim and Ryan ready to tee-off

On Saturday afternoon we met up with Jim and Ryan at the golf course on Patriot's Point, for a round in the sunshine. I was a little anxious as I hadn't hit a golf ball in anger since the summer of '06, when I won a hard fought victory against Hayzee at Kilrea.

Ripping it!

However as you can see from the picture above I had nothing to fear! Sheer natural born ability is hard to shake! In reality though I was pretty bad. Gareth, Ryan and Jim each shot very good rounds, but then again they didn't have to deal with the torment of an infection brewing in one of their molar teeth over the 18 holes!

Chip shot onto the green

All in all I had a great time with Gareth in Charleston for the weekend. It was nice to get some sunshine, and to generally just relax for a couple of days. Hopefully I can get down to SC sometime soon...just in time for the new sofa to arrive!

March Madness in more ways than one!

I'm not sure if the folks back home will know about the 'March Madness' tournament over here in the US of A; so let me give you a quick overview. Each year the 64 top ranked college basketball teams battle it out knockout style for Championship glory. Every man and their dog seems to have an opinion on who will win the tournament, and entering into a pool at work or online with friends is extremely popular, even if you don't know much about basketball or the teams in the tourney.

March Madness Baby

This is my third year of picking the teams that I think will make it all the way to the Final Four, and eventually onto the Championship game. This year I've managed to make some good picks, and I currently stand in 1st and 2nd place of the two pools I entered. I'll let you know how I fair at the end of the tournament.

St. Paddy's Day

March 17th always brings with it a lot of green, silly hats, shamrocks, loud singing and other random shouting...and I'm pleased to say this year was no different!

Bowling on St. Paddy's Day

I went ten pin bowling with the Gablers et al on Saturday afternoon. My lack of playing time, and Spiderman technique led to a poor showing from me, but Shana put together a great score. However the man of the match award was never in any doubt. Evan turned into some sort of bowling machine right before our eyes, and dominated the scoreboard all game long.

Gareth's Trip to DC

Gareth and I outside the Verizon Center

This weekend Gareth caught a flight up to DC to visit Shana and I. On Friday evening we took the metro to the Gallery Place/Chinatown stop, right beside the Verizon Center. We had 3 great seats right on the ice, to watch the Washington Capitals take on the Carolina Hurricanes. The tickets came courtesy of Shana's flatmate Bridget - Big thanks to you Bridget. Unfortunately the Caps had a bad night and ended up getting schooled. After that we watched some college basketball at Willie & Reid's in Bethesda.

On a bench in Bethesda

Saturday morning came early, and was accompanied by a strong hunger for a mixture of flour, water and sugar! Gareth and I met Shana in Bethesda and walked to the Pancake House for pancakes, syrup, bacon, eggs, and coffee. After that Gareth and I took a stroll around B-town, and prepared ourselves mentally and physically...for 300.

300 - Comic Book

Shana decided to go shopping instead....which in hindsight was probably for the best. The ferocious Battle of Thermopylae held no place for women back in 480 BC; and that still holds true to the present day!

300 - The Movie

Gareth and I were both eagerly anticipating this film, and we didn't leave the cinema disappointed. I thought the film really did justice to the original comic book by Frank Miller.
